Stephan Pietersen realised from a young age that he was naturally artistic yet never in his wildest dreams did he ever think he’d land up having a career in the arts, none the less in hairdressing! “I was very indecisive about my career path so I got a job in a salon sweeping floors and learning to wash hair just to pass time. I soon realised one of my greatest strengths was my creativity and the way I easily interacted with people. I decided to become an apprentice and learn as much as I possibly could about the hair industry,” Stephan says. “After training I went on my own. I felt the need to create my own brand. I rented chairs in salons for nine years, building relationships with clients and suppliers and learning the ins and outs of the industry and business in general, before I opened The Senate Hair Salon, Montecasino, in Johannesburg in 2011.”
The Senate’s dictionary meaning is ‘the meeting of two parties’, which is exactly what the Salon is all about – clients and hairstylists. Stephan designed and decorated the Salon with everything he loves. It is absolutely beautiful and overlooks Montecasino’s garden full of red geraniums and white iceberg roses. The success of The Senate, says Stephan, is a result of love. “I love everything about my Salon – my staff loves working here and our clients love coming here, and it’s not just for our cappuccinos! I believe beauty inspires beauty and love inspires love,” he adds. “At The Senate our focus is beautiful, healthy hair and that’s why I teamed up with Wella as my superior colour brand. They are recognised as industry professionals and was the ideal partner supplier. We also stock other premium retail products. I love my business and it has motivated me to challenge myself to expand after four-and-half years. In November 2015 I opened The Senate Hair Salon Camps Bay in Cape Town, where I am now based.”
The Camps Bay salon is more of a ’boutique salon’, giving more individual attention to clients’ needs and has just as much love in the design and decorating. The very distinctive purple walls and silver antique mirrors echo the Johannesburg branch.
When asked about his favourite cuts and styles Stephan says every time he picks up a pair of scissors, or bottle of styling product, he ‘unleashes his creativity’!. “I love everything I do from cutting and colouring, to styling and even a good old perm! My success as a stylist is built on always trying to improve and offering only the best advice and quality styling to each client visiting my salons.”
