Lajawi Beaute Café – Owned by Jawad Maphoto

Jawad Maphoto has never been one to follow the crowd. Owner of Lajawi Beaute Café – a salon in the heart of Melrose – he and his team are acclaimed for their astounding quality in hair artistry. With 12 years of experience in the hair and beauty industry, Jawad has a string of accolades to his name. He made the top six finalists of the 2012 L’Oreal Colour Trophy held in South Africa and judged in Paris at L’Oreal headquarters. He has worked alongside numerous internationally acclaimed hairstylists throughout his career, not to mention the trendy American hair-stylist Ursula Stephen (Rihanna stylist) and Johnny Wright (Michelle Obama stylist). Locally he works closely with multi award-winning hairstylist, Saadique Ryklief (his  mentor). He is consistently featured on hair styling trends shoots on glossy pages of leading local and international magazines. While you’d be forgiven for thinking Jawad’s life has always been glamorous, he admits he had to claw his way to the top. “It really was not an easy journey to embark on, from selling sweets and clothes on the streets of Atteridgeville, part a township located to the west of Pretoria in 2002m to opening a spaza shop (an informal convenience shop business), anything to make ends meet. Later, I studied with Ethno Care, a hair salon based in Pretoria CBD and that’s when things starting falling into place.”

Jawad had aimed to pursue a career as an electrical engineer but as time went on he found himself sweeping floors at a local salon in Lebowakgomo in Limpopo, which his mom  helped  start up. “From there, I discovered my love for hair and began to associate myself with experts in the hair industry, which in turn motivated me to open up my own salon,” he says. “With the help of a good friend/mentor I managed to register Lajawi Beaute Café. I saved money from my monthly earnings to also help contribute to the start-up of my business. Today Lajawi Beaute Café caters primarily to the black market.” Jawad says the biggest challenges along his journey has been consistency on training and having the right staff, educating clients on their hair regimes and staying relevant in the market. His greatest joys include creating  trends and working with A-List celebrities.
