Multi award-winner Angelo Vallillo of Zullo & Holland and The Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy who represented Britain in the Wella Trend Vision Awards in Berlin, is the first British hairdresser to be selected as a member of the Sabastian Professional Artistic Team. His shares his passion of being a hairdresser with us.
How did you get into hairdressing? I had to give up a promising career in professional football after a bad injury, and just when everything seemed hopeless to me my uncle, Romano Zullo, asked me to come and work in his salon. I wasn’t sure at first but he took me along to Salon International in London to see what it was all about. I loved it from the moment I walked in; the energy was like nothing I had felt before.
How old where you when you started in the industry? I was 21.
What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing and open your own salon? I have been inspired by so many amazing people over the years. Creating my own brand, with education at its heart, was something I wanted to do from the start, and everything I’ve done since has been working towards that. I finally opened the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy in 2013 and it’s been amazing. We’ve had great people come to learn with us.
How has the hair industry changed since you started? It’s growing, which is great to see. But there is still room for improvement. Young hairdressers should be pushed a lot more and given more opportunities. We have a challenging programme, linked to the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy, for our newest recruits, and because of it we now have some of the best hairdressers in the UK working for us.
How many stylists do you have working for you? We have a team of 19 working across the Zullo & Holland salon and the Angelo Vallillo Hair Academy.
